Man of the Year

In June, 2008, Steve Lewis ran for the Man of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual campaign.

This was Steve's opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people affected by Leukemia, Lymphoma and blood cancers throughout our community. There were many candidates working hard to raise money for this year's campaign, and together they raised a total of over $37,000 for the Leukemia Society. Shown to the left, Steve Lewis poses with Kristin Katich, the 17-year old Galena High School Junior diagnosed with a blood cancer.

Thank you to friends, family, and everyone in the community who came together to support this important campaign.

AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY TRENDS, WHERE IS THE AUTO INDUSTRY HEADED?

Many trends in recent years have dramatically changed the used auto marketplace.  The driving force behind these trends is the same- the increased consumer demand for more information before they make a purchase decision. (Source: Dohring Company.)

Today, more and more people are turning to the Internet to research buying new and used cars. In a study in 2004, fifty-four (54) percent of all used-vehicle buyers use the Internet as part of the vehicle shopping process, up from 43 percent in 2003. (Source: J.D. Powers & Associates.)  The Internet gives consumers a great deal of pricing power and selection without high pressure salesmen.  And, people can shop at the convenience of their home or office, day or night.

But for those who don't have the time to do the research, another new trend has arrived, "The Auto Locator."  In a recent article in AARP, (May/June, 2008, p.34-36) some people simply want, "the calm and convenience of using an authorized dealer as their personal car shopper."  This way, they can choose a car, set their price, have a greater selection, review detailed inspection reports, pay no deposit, sign no contract, deal with no pushy car salesmen, and have their car delivered and detailed. And, there is the 'dealers advantage'. The article warns that, "the expansion of websites has also meant more places for unscrupulous sellers to unload a lemon. A good dealer recognizes the scams and spots hidden damage the average customer may miss."  Sterling Motors in Reno, NV helps customers locate and negotiate the price on the car they choose and arrange for delivery. Sterling Motors provides a national inventory of quality pre-owned vehicles available only to dealers through dealer-only auctions. The cars come with a complete multi-step inspection process so that customers have the research at their fingertips, without lifting a finger. The customer pays one fee of $1,500 for the service, but more often then not, still gets the car of their dreams for less than any other means available.

Research states that "28 percent of customers surveyed would prefer to shop for a used vehicle at a new car dealership with a manufacturer's certification."  (Source: Dohring Company.)  But what is a certified pre-owned vehicle?  There is actually no industry standard for a 'certified pre-owned vehicle.' Any company can make up the criteria using their own benchmark multi-point inspection and label it 'certified.'  Sterling Motors offers a multi-point inspection process included in their service, but if customers want to add more criteria in the inspection, they can.  Luckily, many states in the US have enacted laws forcing sellers of used vehicles to accurately represent the condition of the vehicle and disclose any potential problems. If you are buying a used car from a used car dealer who has a certified pre-owned vehicle, ask for the report and be sure that safety features have been covered.

In other new trends, as traditional auto dealers undergo consolidation nationwide, used car superstores are aggressively entering the market. But Steve Lewis states, "Superstores have fixed prices, which often restrict negotiations. Used car dealers attend dealer-only auctions and bring back cars to fill their lots.  Personal Car Shoppers find customers cars in the price they want to pay, so there is no lot, no high-pressure, and room for negotiation. And, inventory is greater with Personal Car Shoppers because they have a national inventory of quality pre-owned and previously leased vehicles available at dealer-only auctions across the country."

As the trends keep leading more and more people to the Internet for their auto-shopping needs, more and more people will be making their 'make and model' decisions from the information they find there. And, as more people turn in their 'gas guzzlers' for an economy car, they will be seeking quality used cars to save money.  Many customers are turning to Professional Auto Locators to handle the purchase or their next used car. For many people, they enjoy the convenience, the selection and knowledge that dealers have and the need to acquire information from people who know the industry.

GAS SAVING TIPS

Remember to check your tire pressure and air filter to maximize your cars' fuel economy.

Drive Sensibly. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.
Fuel Economy Benefit: 5-33%
Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $0.20-$1.31/gallon

Remove Excess Weight.
Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2%. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.

Fuel Economy Benefit: 1-2%/100 lbs
Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $0.04-$0.08/gallon.
